Local PackThe map and top three listings Google shows for local searches

Local Pack: The map and set of three business listings that Google shows near the top of results for local searches.

What Is Local Pack?

The local pack, often called the map pack or 3-pack, is the block of three business listings and a map that Google places near the top of results when a search has local intent. Searches like "roofer near me," "coffee shop Warsaw," or "auto repair Elkhart" trigger it.

Each listing comes from a Google Business Profile and shows the business name, rating, review count, category, hours, and quick buttons for calling, directions, or visiting the website. Tapping "More places" opens the full list in Google Maps.

Why Local Pack Matters for Northern Indiana & Michiana Businesses

The local pack sits above most organic results on the page, so the three businesses inside it collect a large share of the attention and calls. For service businesses and shops across Northern Indiana and Michiana, earning a spot here is often the single biggest step toward steady local leads.

Because results change with the searcher's location, a business can rank first in Goshen and lower in Bristol. Local SEO focuses on widening the area where you appear in the top three.

How Local Pack Works

  1. RelevanceGoogle matches the search to your categories, services, description, and website content.
  2. DistanceGoogle considers how close the searcher is to your business location or service area.
  3. ProminenceReviews, ratings, links, citations, and overall reputation show Google which businesses people trust most.
  4. EngagementCalls, clicks, direction requests, and photo views signal that searchers find your listing useful.

A Local Example

A Mishawaka dental office appears in the local pack for searches made near its building but drops out two miles away. After adding detailed service pages to its website, earning steady new reviews, and building consistent citations across local directories, the office starts appearing in the 3-pack for "family dentist" searches across Granger and South Bend.

Getting Started With Local Pack

Begin by searching your top three services the way customers do, such as "water heater repair near me" or "roofing Mishawaka," from a few different spots around your area. Note which businesses appear in the 3-pack and how many reviews, photos, and services each one lists. That snapshot shows the bar you need to clear.

Next, close the biggest gap first. If competitors have far more reviews, launch a simple review request process. If their categories and services are more complete, update your Google Business Profile. If they have dedicated pages for each service and town, add those pages to your website. Recheck the same searches every month so you can see your coverage across Elkhart, St. Joseph, Kosciusko, and nearby counties grow over time.

Quick Wins to Improve Your Local Pack Rankings

  • Complete your Google Business Profile with the best primary category and all services
  • Build a website page for each main service and town you serve
  • Earn new reviews every month and reply to each one
  • Get listed consistently in trusted local and industry directories
  • Add photos and posts so your profile shows recent activity

What to Watch For

  • Grid tracking. Rankings vary block by block, so track results from several points around your area, not just your office.
  • Proximity. You cannot move your address, so strengthen relevance and prominence to reach searchers farther away.
  • Ads above the pack. Local Services Ads and Google Ads can appear above the pack; pairing them with Local SEO covers both spots.
  • Consistency. Mismatched name, address, or phone details across the web weaken trust signals.

Local Pack FAQ

What is the difference between the local pack and organic results?

The local pack shows Google Business Profiles on a map. Organic results are regular website links below it. Strong local businesses work to appear in both.

Can I pay to be in the local pack?

The three organic local pack spots cannot be bought. Google does sell ads that can appear above or within map results, which is a separate strategy.

Why do I rank in one town but not the next?

Distance is a major factor. Better relevance and prominence help you appear for searchers farther from your location.
