Schema MarkupThe code that labels your business facts for Google and AI tools

Schema Markup: Behind-the-scenes code that labels the details on your page, such as business hours, address, reviews, and FAQs, so search engines and AI tools read them accurately.

What Is Schema Markup?

Schema markup is a standard vocabulary of code, published at schema.org, that labels the information on your web pages. It tells search engines that a number is your phone number, a block of text is your business hours, a list is a set of FAQs, and a star rating belongs to a specific service.

Visitors never see schema. It usually sits in the page code as JSON-LD, a small block of structured information. Search engines and AI systems read it to understand your business precisely instead of guessing from the visible text.

Why Schema Markup Matters for Northern Indiana & Michiana Businesses

Clear schema helps Google show rich results such as FAQ answers, breadcrumbs, and business details, and it helps AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews pull accurate facts about your services and location. For a Warsaw orthopedic clinic or a Goshen bakery, that accuracy turns into trust.

Most local competitors have little or no schema, so adding it is one of the clearest technical advantages a Northern Indiana business can gain.

How Schema Markup Works

  1. Choose the right typesLocalBusiness or a more specific type such as Dentist or HVACBusiness, plus Organization, Service, FAQPage, Article, and BreadcrumbList.
  2. Add accurate propertiesName, address, phone, hours, geo coordinates, areas served, services, and social profiles.
  3. Place it on the right pagesBusiness details on the homepage and contact page, Service schema on service pages, FAQPage on FAQ sections.
  4. Test itGoogle's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator confirm the code reads correctly.
  5. Keep it currentUpdate schema whenever hours, services, or contact details change.

A Local Example

A South Bend law firm adds LegalService schema with its practice areas, office hours, and attorney names, plus FAQPage schema on its estate planning page. Google begins showing the firm's breadcrumbs and page details in results, and AI assistants describe its practice areas correctly when asked about estate planning attorneys in St. Joseph County.

Getting Started With Schema Markup

Begin with a LocalBusiness block on your homepage and contact page. Include your exact business name, address, phone number, hours, website, logo, geographic coordinates, and the towns or counties you serve. Choose the most specific type that fits, such as Plumber, Dentist, or AutoRepair, so search engines understand your industry right away.

Next, add FAQPage schema to sections that answer real customer questions and BreadcrumbList schema to pages deeper in your site. Run each page through Google's Rich Results Test, fix any warnings, and then watch the Enhancements reports in Google Search Console. Once the foundation is in place, add Service schema to each service page and Article schema to helpful guides, so every important page tells search engines and AI tools exactly what it covers.

Quick Wins to Improve Your Schema Markup

  • Add LocalBusiness schema with your exact name, address, phone, and hours
  • Use the most specific business type available for your industry
  • Mark up your FAQ sections with FAQPage schema
  • Add BreadcrumbList schema so search results show clear page paths
  • Validate every page with Google's Rich Results Test

What to Watch For

  • Match the page. Schema should describe what visitors can actually see on that page.
  • Real reviews only. Review markup must reflect genuine reviews shown on your site.
  • One source of truth. Keep schema details identical to your Google Business Profile.
  • Rich results vary. Valid schema makes rich results possible; Google decides when to show them.

Does schema markup improve rankings?

Schema helps search engines understand your content, which supports rich results and accurate AI answers. It works best alongside strong content and local signals.

Do I need a developer to add schema?

Schema is code, so it helps to have someone comfortable editing your site. Favze adds and tests schema as part of SEO, AEO, and website builds.

What is JSON-LD?

JSON-LD is the format Google recommends for schema. It is a self-contained block of code that sits in the page without changing how the page looks.
