UTM ParametersTags added to links that tell your analytics where visitors came from

UTM Parameters: Short tags added to the end of a link so your analytics reports exactly which campaign sent each visitor.

What Is UTM Parameters?

UTM parameters are short tags added to the end of a web address that tell analytics tools such as Google Analytics 4 exactly where a visitor came from. A link might end with "?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=spring_sale."

There are five standard UTM parameters: utm_source (the site or platform), utm_medium (the type of channel), utm_campaign (the campaign name), utm_term (often the keyword), and utm_content (which link or ad version). Visitors see the same page; the tags simply label the visit.

Why UTM Parameters Matters for Northern Indiana & Michiana Businesses

Without UTMs, visits from your newsletter, Facebook posts, QR codes on flyers, and Google Business Profile often blend together in analytics. A Mishawaka boutique cannot tell whether its email or its Instagram posts drive more sales.

With consistent UTMs, every campaign shows its results clearly. That clarity helps Northern Indiana businesses spend time and money on the channels that actually bring customers.

How UTM Parameters Works

  1. SourceWhere the traffic comes from, such as google, facebook, or newsletter.
  2. MediumThe channel type, such as cpc, social, email, or qr.
  3. CampaignThe specific promotion, such as fall_tuneup.
  4. ContentWhich link or creative version, useful for testing.
  5. TermThe keyword, mainly for paid search.

A Local Example

A Goshen garden center promotes a spring sale through email, Facebook, printed flyers with QR codes, and its Google Business Profile. It adds UTM parameters to every link and QR code. In Google Analytics, it sees that email drove the most purchases, the QR codes drove many first-time visitors, and Facebook drove high traffic with fewer purchases.

The next season, the garden center invests more in email and flyer distribution and uses Facebook mainly for event awareness.

Getting Started With UTM Parameters

Create a simple naming guide so everyone tags links the same way. Use lowercase letters, underscores instead of spaces, and consistent source and medium names, such as "facebook" and "social" every time.

Use Google's Campaign URL Builder or a shared spreadsheet to build tagged links. Start with your Google Business Profile website link, your email newsletter links, social media posts, and any QR codes on printed materials. Review the Traffic acquisition report in Google Analytics 4 monthly to compare campaigns.

As your system matures, add UTMs to links in partner websites, sponsorship pages, and directory listings you control. Over a few months, you will build a clear picture of which relationships and promotions send people who actually buy, which turns guesswork about marketing into confident decisions.

Quick Wins to Improve Your UTM Tracking

  • Add UTMs to your Google Business Profile website link
  • Tag every email newsletter link
  • Use UTM-tagged QR codes on printed materials
  • Keep a shared naming guide in lowercase
  • Review campaign results monthly in Google Analytics 4

What to Watch For

  • Inconsistent naming. "Facebook" and "facebook" appear as separate sources in reports.
  • Internal links. Never add UTMs to links between your own pages; it breaks session data.
  • Personal data. Keep names, emails, and other personal details out of URLs.
  • Auto-tagging. Google Ads auto-tagging already tracks ads, so manual UTMs there are optional.

UTM Parameters FAQ

Do UTM parameters affect SEO?

No. Use canonical tags so search engines treat tagged and untagged links as the same page.

Where do I see UTM data?

In Google Analytics 4 under Traffic acquisition, using session source, medium, and campaign dimensions.

Do I need all five parameters?

Source, medium, and campaign cover most needs. Content and term are optional.

Yes. Adding tags such as utm_source=google, utm_medium=organic, and utm_campaign=gbp to your profile's website link separates profile visits from other Google traffic in Analytics.

Can I use UTMs with QR codes?

Yes. Create the tagged link first, then generate the QR code from it.
