Russiaville was laid out in 1845 and is named for Jean Baptiste de Richardville, a Miami chief of French-Miami descent. Over time the name changed through French pronunciation.
On April 11, 1965, an F4 tornado during the Palm Sunday Tornado Outbreak destroyed almost all of the town. The town was incorporated sometime between the 1860 and 1870 censuses.
Jonathan Dixon Maxwell, the builder of the Maxwell automobile, was born in Russiaville in 1864 and is buried there. In 1949, the town's high school became Western High School through county consolidation.
